Excessive Facial Sweating: Causes, Treatment and Control

Our body produces sweat to regulate our body temperature. This natural phenomenon is regulated by our sympathetic nervous system, one of the branches of our autonomic nervous system that maintains our body’s stability in response to environmental changes.

In a relatively low percentage (between one to three percent) of the population, control of the sweat glands can sometimes go haywire, leading to excessive sweating that is beyond the normal body temperature regulation function. This disorder is known as hyperhidrosis.

The other classification of excessive sweating may result from a medical malady, sometimes brought about by thyroid problems, psychological stress, menopause, diabetes mellitus, or other conditions. This is known as secondary hyperhidrosis.

Excessive facial sweating, affecting the face, scalp and neck, is an indication of hyperhidrosis. Such condition is more often a social deterrent than a medical concern. However, a person’s degree of human interaction will be greatly affected by the prevalence of excessive facial sweating.

Persons with excessive facial sweating may not interact well with other people. They can be perceived as easily agitated or distressed due to seemingly uncontrollable sweating in the presence of others. They, thus, commonly stay away from a throng of people or avoid meeting strangers and often viewed as aloof.

Treatments for hyperhidrosis vary. Secondary hyperhidrosis can be cured by treating the underlying medical condition that cause excessive sweating. The following options are available to people with excessive facial sweating or hyperhidrosis:

a) Antiperspirants or aluminum chloride (hexahydrate) solution

b) Injection of Botox or botulinum toxin

c) Iontophoresis

d) Drugs such as anticholinergic, drugs beta-blockers, or antidepressant

e) Aluminum chloride (hexahydrate) solution or antiperspirants

f) Homoeopathy, massage, acupuncture and phytotherapeutic drugs

g) Hypnosis or hypnotic induction

h) Hypnosis or hypnotic induction

Creams on the face and oily cosmetics may tend to exacerbate excessive facial sweating so it would be best to avoid them. Hot or humid environment also contributes to the excess sweat production. Control excess sweat by keeping body and face cool and dry as possible.

Stress is an anxiety booster and can trigger profuse sweating, so avoid stressful conditions whenever you can. Live healthy and avoid smoking and drinking caffeinated drinks and beverages. Strive always for a balanced work and home life.
